The history

esterno1The weaving in Sicily and particularly in Erice was introduced from the Greeks, later the Arabs, during their domination, have imported the silkworm and the cotton.

During the domination of the Normans in Trapani there were silk-mills that have produced appreciated hand-made articles with commercial production quantity.

Towards the end of the XIII century the laboratories of production of the wool and the weaving of the cloth began to develop themselves, the weaving of the cloth continued to be practiced in numerous centers of the county. Particularly in the "agro ericino" (Buseto Palizzolo, Custonaci, Valderice, Vita, Salemi) where still today the art of weaving is executed following the ancient techniques.

The typical product is the "trappita", popular carpet made by weaving strips of colored cloth. The texture of the carpets is formed from geometric figures from the vivacious colors on dark background.
